Let the holidays begin with the best fudge ever

Irish Cream Fudge

When it comes to the holidays, the first thing I think of when it comes to candy making…is my Irish Cream Fudge. I’ve tried a lot of fudge over the years, searching for the perfect recipe and this is what I’ve come up with:

4-1/2 cups sugar

1 can evaporated milk (12 oz.)

½ lb butter

2 packages, milk chocolate chips (12 oz. each)

1 package, semisweet chocolate chips (12 oz.)

2 jars marshmallow cream (7 oz. ea.)

2/3 cup St. Brendans’ Irish Cream Liqueur

2 cups chopped nuts (walnuts or pecans)

Line a 10” x 15” pan with foil and grease lightly with butter.

Combine chocolate chips, marshmallow cream, Saint Brendan’s® and nuts in a large bowl and set aside.

Combine sugar, evaporated milk and butter in a medium, heavy saucepan and bring to a boil. Reduce heat and cook for 11 minutes, stirring constantly

Pour milk mixture over chocolate chip mixture and stir slowly by hand. Pour into prepared pan. Chill until set.

Give it a try, you’ll love it.

Thanksgiving is coming…time to think about the brine.

If you’ve never brined a turkey, it’s a must to consider. Once I tried it I was hooked. it’s definitely a must try and the end results are the most succulent bird I’ve ever had.

1 (14 to 16 pound) frozen young turkey

For the brine:
1 cup kosher salt
1/2 cup light brown sugar
1 gallon vegetable stock
1 tablespoon black peppercorns
1 1/2 teaspoons allspice berries
1 gallon heavily iced water

For the aromatics:
Celery (3) stalks sliced
Carrots (3) sliced
Onions sliced and quartered
Rosemary (4) sprigs
Sage (6) leaves
Garlic (5 cloves)

2 to 3 days before roasting:

Begin thawing the turkey in the refrigerator or in a cooler kept at 38 degrees F.

Combine the vegetable stock, salt, brown sugar, peppercorns, and allspice berries in a large stockpot over medium-high heat. Stir occasionally to dissolve solids and bring to a boil. Then remove the brine from the heat, cool to room temperature, and refrigerate.

Early on the day or the night before you’d like to eat:

Combine the brine, water and ice in the 5-gallon bucket. Place the thawed turkey (with innards removed) breast side down in brine. If necessary, weigh down the bird to ensure it is fully immersed, cover, and refrigerate or set in cool area for 8 to 16 hours, turning the bird once half way through brining.

Preheat the oven to 500 degrees F. Remove the bird from brine and rinse inside and out with cold water. Discard the brine.

Place the bird on roasting rack inside a half sheet pan and pat dry with paper towels.

Place aromatics to the turkey’s cavity. Tuck the wings underneath the bird and coat the skin liberally with canola oil. Add salt and pepper both interior and exterior of bird.

Roast the turkey on lowest level of the oven at 500 degrees F for 30 minutes. Insert a probe thermometer into thickest part of the breast and reduce the oven temperature to 350 degrees F. Set the thermometer alarm (if available) to 161 degrees F. A 14 to 16 pound bird should require a total of 2 to 2 1/2 hours of roasting. Let the turkey rest, loosely covered with foil or a large mixing bowl for 15 minutes before carving.

And if you decide to get a little silly, you can always put your turkey in a bikini.

Happy Thanksgiving Everyone!

When things start to click:

Mischief Under the Mistletoe

As a writer you’re somewhat intimidated putting your heart in your books. How will people react when they read your stories. You worry about the negative reviews. You beat yourself up wondering if you should have done more. The only way you know you’re on the right track is from feedback. I love hearing from people who enjoy my stories. And recently I had my own personal exciting moments. Mischief Under the Mistletoe made it to #1 in Holiday category on Amazon. Not what alone was beyond exciting for me. In fact, it’s been #1 several times now…and it’s not even released.

Crashing into Love

This week marked another highlight of my writing career. Crashing into Love made it to #2 in the Free category on Amazon. This book is FREE until September 28th, so get it while you can.

These instances have checked off a couple of my personal bucket list items.

I look forward to checking of more and the books continue to come out.

Have a great day, I am!

“Crashing Into Love” anthology – to be released July 1, 2015

pythons of the south pacific

Now that I have your attention ;-)… I’m part of the “Crashing Into Love” anthology – to be released July 1, 2015.

While writing this story I was in the middle of a scene…Oliver was taking a swim in the surf, when he came out, Hannah was gone…he called for her, but she didn’t respond…he raced into the jungle, calling her name. She told him to stop, not come any further. She was in the middle of “poppin a squat” when a python grabbed her…by this point I’m drawing a blank. I had researched snakes of the area and had all sorts of colorful snakes in my file I had planned to use. I have no idea where the python came from, so I naturally hit the internet and typed in pythons in the South Pacific…this is what I got. I couldn’t stop laughing in order to get back to Hannah’s terror…and you wonder why I write comedy…eeesh!

Meet Hannah Parks and Oliver Lawson:

Hannah Parks just started her bucket list…the trauma nurse on her way to a symposium at the Sister Kenny Rehabilitation Institute. She just started her bucket list and a plane crash definitely wasn’t on it.

Oliver Lawson’s divorce is final and he’s looking to start over. A tropical island, a gorgeous woman., and romance is one thing, getting there as a result of a crash landing…who knew a plane crash would lead to romance?

Here’s a snippet from “A Splash of Romance”

When they finished, Oliver excused himself and took a swim in the ocean. He had so much pent up energy he couldn’t stand it. The exertion felt great, just what he needed. He returned the shore only it was empty. “Hannah,” he called out. She didn’t respond. Racing out of the surf full speed, headed for the edge of the jungle. He pushed his way past the thick vegetation. He tripped on a vine, but caught himself.
He made if about thirty yards into the foliage, calling out, “Where are you?”
“Don’t come any closer, it might bite me.” Her voice was shaking.
“What are you talking about? Where are you?” He searched everywhere listening for a clue to her whereabouts.
“I’m about ten yards to your right. I-I was copping a squat when it grabbed me.”
“You were what?” He went around a huge boulder and still didn’t see her.
“You know, shaking hands with my best mate.”
Oliver laughed at her use of the term.
“Stop laughing and tell me what to do? Hurry Oliver, I’m afraid to move.”
Oliver edged toward her voice, looking all around as he went, trying to figure out what she was talking about. Ever vigilant, he stepped cautiously as he moved closer.
“Say something.” He was getting closer.
“I’m over here.”
Oliver stopped where he was. His gaze fused with Hannah’s. She stood frozen in place. A fifteen foot python used its heat sensors along its jaw to check her out. He was well aware of their poor eyesight. It was a perfect specimen, with its beautiful dark brown and gold patterned skin, although somehow he didn’t think Hannah would share his love of snakes. It wasn’t squeezing her. He scanned the ground for a branch or stick he could use to free her before the thing decided it was hungry for her.
Stepping carefully, he edged closer. “When I get to you I’m going to use the stick I have to gently move it away from your stomach. You’re going to have to move slowly away from it. Luckily, it isn’t coiled around you. It’s playing with you. ”
“Playing my ass—how can you say that? I’m freaking out.” Her face was drained of all color.
He inched the last few steps. “No you’re not. You’re doing great. Remaining calm is the right thing to do. Just don’t make any abrupt movements. I’m almost there.”
Hannah sniffed.
He could see she was shaking. He had to move now. “Okay, now when you feel the weight of the snake move off you, step forward slowly and just keep walking toward the beach, I’ll be right behind you.”
“Oliver, I’m scared.” Her lips trembled.
“Don’t be. Almost there.” He raised the branch, it was as big around as a woman’s forearm and tucked it under the snake’s jaw, steering the head away from Hannah. When the head was about two feet from Hannah he whispered, “Now. Go!”
Hannah took three cautious steps then bolted, shoving her way through the foliage as fast as she could.
He moved the snake to the left and it slithered up the tree. He dropped the branch and ran after Hannah.
He barely broke through the jungle to the beach when she launched herself into his arms. “My plan worked. Glad the snake cooperated.”
“I’ve never been so scared. That was worse than the plane crash. I was trying to go to the bathroom before you came back, and it never entered my mind to keep an eye out for snakes. I barely managed to get my underwear up when it grabbed me.” Hannah shivered.
Oliver couldn’t stop laughing. She rambled like nitwit and shook something fierce. He did the only thing he could think of. He kissed her.
Hannah melted into his arms. He moved her away from the jungle walking her straight towards the surf. They didn’t stop until they were waist deep.
“Thank you.” Hannah stroked his cheek.
“For what? I should thank you for giving me the excuse to play your hero.”
Hannah kissed him again. Lost in her delicious kisses, he wrapped his arms around her and pulled her close. He squeezed her ass cheek. Her arms wrapped around his neck pulling her closer still.
Out of nowhere, a big wave slammed over the tops of their heads, knocking them to the ground, sending them body surfing onto the shore. Hannah’s lips never left his mouth. They lay in the surf, reminding him of the scene in the old movie with the couple necking as the waves surrounded their bodies.
It was the hottest kiss of his life

Writing a series…

The Twisted Sisters Club Series

Writing a series can be fun. Writing 5 different women, with different personalities and keeping them straight, not so much. Thank God there women keep me laughing with their antics.

We all hope to have friends that will be there for us, through thick and thin. In the Twisted Sisters Club series, Sabrina, Angel, Kat, Jill, and Carina do just that, only it doesn’t stop there; these friends are so close they don’t know the meaning of boundaries.

From Sabrina landing in jail for solicitation in Sex, Lies, and Beauty Aids, to Angel winding up on the cover of a Tabloid in Sex, Secrets, & Happily Ever Afters, this band of friends knows one thing above all…they’re only a phone call away.

No trouble is too small, no man is too hot, and no one is safe in a game of Truth and Dare,  when 5 friends call each other on the carpet about their various situations in life. No one walks away unscathed.

Book II of the Twisted Sisters Club: Sex, Secrets, and Happily Ever Afters is on Pre-sale now and set to release on August 4, 2015

Angel Talbot is anything but pure—in fact some might even consider her a bit wicked. How else would you describe the manager of an ‘adults only’ store that specializes in helping ladies find that special O. But Angel could use a hand herself. Or two. That is until she stumbles into sexy businessman Travis Wellington.

When the Wellington Family had a problem, they sent Travis to fix it. Being the CEO of his family’s multi-million dollar enterprise means Travis is used to getting his hands dirty. But the pressure of looking out for the company, along with his family’s well-being was beginning to take its toll…until he found his Angel…

NOTE: Half the proceeds of Sex, Lies, and Beauty Aids and Sex, Secrets, and Happily Ever Afters is going to ROWW, in honor of Paul and Cody Walker and all their hard work for this terrific organization

While some say truth is stranger than fiction, Deb Julienne’s experience runs more along the lines of a slap-stick comedy; when life tosses you lemons the only thing to do is to turn it into Limoncello. She resides in her own little bit of heaven in the Sierra Tahoe National Forest Basin, with her husband of 33 years, their three sons and one daughter, and two very precious grandkids.

Lovely young couple having fun in the bedroom

When it comes to the heroes in our stories we want them to be fun, lovable, exciting, charming, and above all capture our hearts.

I started writing Sex, Lies, and Beauty Aids back in 2000, my story didn’t click until I found my true hero for the part of Travis Wellington.

If you’ve seen the cover (above), my pinterest page about my books, or the trailer, you’ve seen Paul Walker is my chosen muse for the character of twins Trent/Travis Wellington. One of the deciding factors for choosing Paul wasn’t just that he’s handsome, oh and believe me he is, but it was discovering the personal side of the man beyond the movies.

I wanted an admirable man, not just a handsome one. I wanted my character to stand out as someone to look up to. In a time and age where Hollywood is spitting out movie stars with no real heart, soul, honor, and conviction…I spent months searching for the right man.

Paul Walker – Just look at that smile…how can you not fall for him?

hePaul Walker 5Paul Walker 8

In addition to his movie endeavors, Paul founded Reach Out Worldwide whose mission statement reads: “REACH OUT Worldwide is a quick-response, mobile first aid organization aiding in rescue and recovery after major natural disasters around the globe.”

Their relief efforts have helped with Tornados in Illinois, Alabama, and Oklahoma City, the Colorado Flood, and Typhoons in Haiyan and the Philippines. It’s amazing to see such a humble man who cared so much, then gave even more of himself, not to mention how far reaching his efforts have gone.

But Paul’s story doesn’t end here.

In my opinion, Paul is not the only hero in the Walker family. Enter Cody Walker.

I’m using Cody’s official Facebook Bio here with his permission:

“I’m the youngest of the Walker siblings. I grew up in Southern California and graduated from La Canada High School in 2006. I then went on to Santa Barbara City College and eventually graduated from UCSB with a Bachelors in Cultural Anthropology. Immediately after graduating I earned my EMT certification from UCLA center of Prehospital Care and moved up to Oregon where I pursued schooling to become a Paramedic. For the last two and half years I worked on an ambulance as an EMT and then in June of 2013 I completed school and became a licensed Paramedic. At that time I continued with the ambulance and began working as a Paramedic.”

This in and of itself is a remarkable man. And again, the story doesn’t stop here.

In light of the loss of Paul Walker, who passed away on November 30, 2013, Cody made a life changing decision to make sure his brother’s legacy lived on. He packed his bags and moved back to California: “to give ROWW all I’ve got. I wanted to make Paul proud in life, and I want him to look down on ROWW now knowing that its future is bright. I look forward to working with the ROWW team and fulfilling the unmet need.”

Paul Walker will be truly missed, but his legacy lives on in his beloved brother, Cody. Way to go Cody, my new hero.

Please join me in supporting Paul Walker, Cody Walker, and Reach Out Worldwide and help make a difference. I will be donating half of the profits of my debut books: ‘Sex, Lies, and Beauty Aids’ and ‘Antics, Antidotes, and Angel’ to ROWW.

Bless you Paul and Cody!

Blog Hopping

Welcome on a brief journey into the world of Deb Julienne, no telling where we’ll end up.

First, I’d like to thank M.Q. Barber for tagging me in the Writing Process Blog Hop. She’s a fellow Lyrical/Kensington author working on the third book Healing the Wounds (neighborly Affection #3), sequel to the Playing the Game and Crossing the Lines. M.Q. Barber took us on a trip to the wild side, now it’s my turn to take you into the craziness that is mine.

What am I working on?

I’m finishing of the revisions of Antics, Antidotes, and Angel, (book 2 of the Twisted Sisters Club series) the sequel to Sex, Lies, and Beauty Aides, then onto book 3 Love, Lies, and Alibis, and book 4 Suckers, Soldiers and Mischief Makers. At the same time I’m plotting a nine book cowboy series I can’t wait to dig into.

How does my work differ from others of its genre?

I classify my genre as romantic comedy.

What’s different about my stories or at least this series is that it’s about different kinds of revenge with a twist of comedy. Yes, I’m a Lucy junkie and proud of it. Who can forget all the situation Lucy managed to find herself in..all for the sake of those 4 little words: “I’ve got an idea.”

LucyLucy 3Lucy 2Lucy 4Lucy 5

In the first book of the series, it’s dealing with an innocent girl…don’t laugh, there are quite a few left in the world, even if they are a minority. Not everyone has lived a perfect life, fully informed with complete knowledge of every aspect of life, love, sex, men, and all things of the world. Sabrina considers herself a nice person. Being mean isn’t in her vocabulary. Neither is acting like something she’s not. The girl next door really does exist.

Give her some internal and external scars, a penchant for all things fashion, and you have Sabrina Thompson. Her world is turned upside down when she’s given an ultimatum, learn and write about LOVE and SEX or lose her job.

Think about it…go back to the last day of your own innocence. How would you suddenly learn about it? In my day we didn’t have the internet. There was no reality TV blatantly throwing it in your face. Step forward because Sabrina does live in a world of the internet, TV, reality TV, and you still have a problem. Who do you ask? Where do you go? It’s not like we’re given a manual with step-by-step instructions the second we start thinking about the opposite sex. We learn by trial and error. In Sabrina’s case it was baptism by flame-thrower, tossed into a situation she’s not prepared to deal with.

Sure Sabrina has Kat and Jill, but with an uncomfortable topic how do you EASE into it. Falling for Travis gave her a good start, but then what? Sex and love mean many things to people. She soon discovers it’s not just an act, it’s a pretense, an illusion that Sabrina must uncover for herself. When she discovers Travis has been lying to her, that he’s really the man she’s crushed on for years, there is only one thing to do…make him pay, dearly. Sabrina’s brand of vengeance teaches Trent a lesson he’ll never forget.

Sex, Lies, and Beauty Aides Trailer

Sex, Lies, and Beauty Aides started out as a single book. By the time I finished it Kat was ranting and screaming for her own story, “Why should Sabrina have all the fun?” And of course, Jill was jealous, “When do I get a man of my own.”

It was only AFTER I finished Sex, Lies, and Beauty Aides that my editor asked “What about Angel?”

Summer Glau 26   Summer Glau as Angel Talbot

I actually hadn’t thought about her. And once I did her story took off like someone poured gasoline on it and lit it with a match. Instant inferno.

In Angel’s story, I consider her broken to some degree…too hurt to take chances. The only man who could convince her otherwise is a man who had been equally damaged, but was willing to take one last stab at a chance for love and a life with a woman he’s not willing to let get away. When his ex comes back into the picture, the lost girl finds her voice and turns heads and hearts defending the man she loves, but can Travis convince Angel she deserves his love as well?

MV5BMTkxODQyNzgxMF5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTYwNTA3NjE2__V1__CR60,0,279,279_SS100_     Charlize Theron as Kat Grantham

Kat’s story is about bullies. At a time where bullies are ever prominent, it’s not just children who deal with bullies, there are bullies of every kind in the adult world, and who but the outspoken Kat could deal with a bully and extract her own special style of revenge to protect the family business. I wrote this one with a real life friend in mind. She was married to a bully of her own, he was sneaky, low, and if I had my way about it he’d no longer be among the living. Since I’m a law abiding citizen, I let Kat have a crack at a slime ball and taught him a lesson every girl would love to dish out.

Lindy booth as Jill   Lindy Booth as Jill Kincaid

In Jill’s story it’s a matter of life taking over. Her family is gone and she’s alone. Jill moves to the Time of Your Life Retirement home as the activities director to care for the seniors she’s come to love and genuinely care for. If you met the little old ladies in book I, you have a good idea of what I’m talking about. By book two the Blue-haired brigade is beginning to grow. By the time Jill’s story starts they’re fully formed and taking prisoners wherever they go. When someone kills one of the seniors she’s come to love, Jill’s revenge takes on a whole new meaning as she extinguishes them. Nobody messes with her family.

Why do I write what I do?

Well, let’s see…I’m 55 years old. I’ve been married for 33 years to a great guy, but life has given us some very real, very harsh things to deal with. He was on total disability at age 35 for degenerative disc disease. He’s my 2 million dollar man, without the bionics. He’s survived 12 surgeries: 7 back, 1 neck, 1 shoulder, 3 heart surgeries, including quadruple heart bypass, we’re dealing with diabetes, heart issues, and kidney issues. He’s died on me twice and luckily been brought back to life. We’ve raised 4 kids on a very limited budget. I’m the queen of making money stretch. I’ve been laid off twice and been told that if I didn’t get a job and get hubby back on insurance I’d lose him. I know all about panic, chaos, and how unfair life can be. I’m sick of the real life angst, meds vs food vs living. I’m tired of struggling every dad-gummed day, but I do it, life goes on. I’m fed up with the stupidity of with modern times…needless to say I hate reality TV. They need to try a day in my shoes…then get a life!

Yes, I’ve discovered just how strong I am. This is also why I write comedy. It’s my escape and my chance to create the kind of Karma I’d like to see.

How does my writing process work?

Here’s an example from Sex, Lies, and Beauty Aides: I get a glimmer of an idea. In this case, I had a female character, outwardly scarred and as a result, emotionally challenged. The actual scar she received as a teen and the torment she went through thanks to her peers, created the introvert she became, sending her into a self-imposed exile to escape from that torment, which led to an addiction to movies as her only outlet.

Years later, she now lives on a shoe-string, she masks her scars with an addiction to fashion, even though her wardrobe comes from thrift shops, granted they are high end, and the poor girl can’t even afford a decent mani/pedi. And yet she’s out to save the world, one beauty aide at a time. She’s fun, fun-loving, and smart, and while her female friends can be counted on one hand, they’re totally loyal. She can talk to guys but they don’t take her seriously because they view her as a little sister. Plus she’s utterly and completely naive about some things.

Then I had to decide how mean to be to her. I had to ask…what does she fear? What’s the worst thing that could happen to her…then let it happen. Some funny, some not so funny.

And of course, I had to create a man strong enough to could get beyond her mental barriers, remove her thorns, and help her blossom.

I started this story back in 2000. Then as usual my real life took over…when I got back to my story in 2010 I liked it, but it was missing something. My hero and heroine just didn’t sparkle as I wanted them to.

he     Paul Walker as Trent/Travis Wellington

I like to choose my characters from the actors and actresses I’ve seen and admired. I chose Paul Walker for my muse to model Trent/Travis after. I watched everything I could find with him in it. I also did some research on the man. What I found was a real life hero. Someone who was larger than life, who cared about his world, and gave of himself for the greater good. Once I started using his real life admirable qualities I could picture Trent so clearly that Paul became Trent and vice versa. I’d like to think I did him justice. I can’t wait for Paul’s movie “Hours” to come out. I have a feeling it’s going to have been his finest work. We miss you Paul!

she   Autumn Reeser as Sabrina Thompson

As for Sabrina, I tried a number of actresses, but it was only when I selected Autumn Reeser that Sabrina came alive. She had the sweet quality of my character. I could see her going through all of Sabrina’s trial and tribulations, only to come out stronger than she imagined. What’s funny, is that in book II she continues to evolve as a character.

I can’t wait to share the rest of the books with you!

The Writing Process Blog Hop continues I’ve tagged three talented authors to follow me, so please check them out below and visit their site on Monday, April 7, for a peek at their writing processes.

Anise Rae:  Website          Facebook          Amazon

Anise Rae has no superpowers. To compensate, she dreams up alternative realities where magic rules, worlds that are populated with heroines who dare to stand up to society’s expectations and be true to themselves and heroes with plenty of savvy to fall in love with such brave women. She aims to live life like her characters do–with days full of love, adventure, and magic. In case that fails, and sometimes it does, she hits the escape button on her iPhone and reads a book. She’s well-prepared for such emergencies, always keeping all three e-reader apps fully stocked. Urban fantasy and paranormal and sci-fi romance are her genres of choice. Her debut novel, Syphon’s Song, is the first book in the Mayflower Mages series.

Catherine McGreevy:  Twitter          Facebook         Blog

Catherine McGreevy lives in Northern California. A former newspaper reporter and editor, she grew up in several countries overseas and is an avid historical enthusiast with particular interest in Gold Rush history. She has even been known to don period clothing to reenact the past at Sutter’s Fort and at the gold discovery site at Coloma!  Catherine writes both romantic suspense and historical, two of which are currently available on Kindle Select and Smashwords. The Jewelry Case is a romantic suspense novel about an opera singer caught up in a search for lost heirloom jewels, and The Gardener is a historical about an English gardener sentenced to hang for a crime he did not commit, who must rely on the help of a headstrong American girl to escape and finds love along the way! More novels are on the way!

Kathy Coatney:  Web         Facebook          Twitter          Goodreads          Blog

My journey as a writer began when I turned 30, my youngest started kindergarten, and I went back to college. I took a class on fiction writing and the author was born—except it wasn’t a direct route to publishing my novels. I took a 15-year detour as a photojournalist specializing in agriculture. Twenty years later I published my first book, but it wasn’t the romance novel I’d anticipated—it was a children’s book. Three more children’s books have followed and now, finally, my first romance. This book is near and dear to my heart as Emma reflects all my years in agriculture and more than a decade sitting on the bleachers watching my children play baseball.
